During the course of a poker game, each player receives one card face up. After a round of betting, a set of three cards, the “flop,” is placed on the table. This is followed by another round of betting. At the end of the round, the highest card is discarded and the next highest is revealed.
In the first round of the flop, a player must bet at least the minimum amount required by the rules of the game. After that, players may check or fold. A “check” is a bet that is not made, while a “fold” means that the player no longer wants to compete for the pot. There are several variations of this rule.
Most games of poker involve a blind bet, which is a bet that is placed without the knowledge of the other players. If a player does not have any chips to contribute, he will be forced to ante, a pre-set sum of money that is placed in the pot.
In some variants of the game, a “wild card” is dealt to each player. This can be a combination of the other cards in the deck, which allows a five-card hand to beat a straight flush. Some variants also allow jokers to be added to the standard 52-card pack.

While there are a lot of different poker variants, the rules are generally the same. The only exceptions are a few different styles of poker that require different rules.
