Poker is a card game in which players try to form the best hand possible. The player who makes the best hand, using the highest-ranked cards, wins the pot. Ties are broken by the high card. If two players have a four of a kind with the same rank, the high card determines who wins the tie.
The standard pack of poker cards are ranked from Ace low to Ace high. Cards in lower ranks may be replaced by Wild Cards. Players can discard cards to improve their hand, but can’t change their cards until all others have finished betting.
To begin a hand, each player is dealt five cards. Some games, such as seven-card stud, require that the best five-card hand be made. In other games, a player’s hand can be made from a combination of the dealer’s and other players’ cards. These games can be played by one or more people, but Texas Hold’em is most commonly played with a minimum of five or six players.
During a hand, each player can bet or fold. If a player raises the stake, the pot goes to that player. If a player folds, the pot will stay the same. When all other players call, the betting ends. During the next round, the player who has the highest-ranked hand in the remaining bets wins.
If a player’s hand doesn’t match the other players, a foul is drawn. A foul is a hand that has no value. For example, a pair of 6’s beats a counterfeit hand. However, if a board contains a pair of better pairs, a counterfeit card devalues the hand.

Sometimes, the deck is divided into multiple packs. There are also some variants where the dealer uses a special wild card to supplement the rest of the cards.
